On the Pronomos Flute
Julián Elvira’s Pronomos Flute is the product of an exhaustive 20-year investigation into flute acoustics and of the “Complex” system concieved by Is- tvan Matuz of Budapest. The aim of the Pronomos Flute is the achievement of a greater realization of the sonorous and timbral possibilities of the instrument, backed up by the mechanical changes and adaptions necessary to realize this whole new world of sounds. It is a unique, self-produced instrument, which marks perhaps a last step in the evolution of the modern flute since Theobald Boehm finally established it at the end of the 19th century.

The Pronomos flute is a classic instrument with it’s roots in the 20th century, enhanced and developed for the 21st century.

In the words of Robert Dick: “The Pronomos Flute is without doubt an interesting development in the possibilities of the instrument’s potential. ‘Complex’ hardly scratches the surface when describing this very evolved design”.

The creation of this new instrument represents a turning point for the flute, the music written for it and how it is played as we know it today.

The sound possibilities, microtonal aspect, poliphonic possibility which come about as a result of this evolution of the flute represent an important sonorous and expressive leap forward for the instrument, showing us a fascinating musi- cal universe that goes beyond known and expected paths.
Using the scientific and acoustic knowledge acquired from the “Complex” system of Matuz as basis of the Pronomos flute, the instrument developed by Julián Elvira offers us a broader perspective, permiting flutists and listeners to hear and experience the flute in yet newer ways.
